Rare birds, tuataras – fun for all the family at ZEALANDIA. ZEALANDIA achieved the impossible when the final nail of the ground breaking, one of a kind predator free fence was completed 1999. With the 500-year vision in place ZEALANDIA has lofty ambitions to restore Wellington valley’s forest and freshwater ecosystem as closely as possible to its pre-human state. Over the last number of years these ambitions have materialized. Located a short 10 minute drive from downtown. Wellington ZEALANDIA is a step back in time to the period before human interference. Since the sanctuary opened we have seen 17 species of native wildlife return to the area, 6 of which were previously absent from mainland New Zealand for over 100 years. While situated minutes from downtown ZEALANDIA feels like a different world. The rolling hills provide the perfect backdrop for you to explore the many treks and pathways where you will be accompanied byKaka, Kakariki & Korimako to name just some of the bird species who roam the 225 hectare sanctuary. ZEALANDIA also hosts an interactive exhibition which tells the story of New Zealand’s unique ecological history.
